Early Signs & Symptoms of Dementia

One of the commonest sign of dementia is forgetting recently learned information. Persons with dementia may forget important dates or events; repeatedly asking for the same information.
Persons with dementia may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. They may have difficulties concentrating and may take longer time to complete tasks that they were familiar with.
The ability to follow or join a group conversation may be affected. They may need longer time to respond to conversations. They may have a reduction in expressive vocabulary or work finding difficulties.
Person with dementia can lose tracks of dates, seasons and the passage of time. They may get disorientated in time and space with difficulties differentiating recent and past events. They may also forget where they are and how they got o certain places.
Person with dementia often experience difficulties in making decisions or have a poor sense of judgement. It can be hard for them to understand what is fair and reasonable, for example, they may be prone to making poor financial decisions.
Ability to perform daily activities becomes more challenging. They may require reminders or supervision such as taking medication, shower or paying household bills.
Frequently misplacing belongings and unable to make plans to retrace them.
Changes in mood and personality such as confusion, paranoia, irritability, anxiety, aggression can occur. They may become more withdrawn and socially isolated from relatives and friends.
Persons with dementia may have challenges in reading, judging distances and working out the differences between colours.
Persons with dementia may withdraw themselves from their hobbies or social activities. They have trouble keeping up or engaging in their favourite hobby
