Refusal to day care services

Using care services such as day care can be beneficial for the persons with dementia and their caregivers. Care services focus on enriching the person with dementia by providing them with social interaction and may help build up their skills and strengths.

Benefits for the person with dementia

  • A safe, secure environment in which to spend the day or part of the day
  • Provides enjoyable activities
  • Meaningful social interactions that can improve both their mental and physical health
  • Mental and social stimulation during the day improves their quality of sleep at night

Benefits for the caregivers enable caregivers to

  • Have the necessary breaks to help avoid burnout
  • To continue working or finish chores that need to be done
  • Have a peace of mind that the person with dementia is being cared for by trained personnel

Care tips

First, collect information about the services available, and narrow it down to a few places at the end. It is important that the service of choice should have other day care participants who are similar in age and condition with the person with dementia. This is to ensure that the activities they are doing are likely to be relevant to the person with dementia. The person with dementia’s preference is important and the family should select a service that they like.
  • Go to the facility together with them. Families accompanying them to the care facilities can help to reduce their anxiety. In the beginning, try to visit them more often.
  • Changing environment. There is a possibility that the person with dementia and the atmosphere of the facility do not match. Different facilities operate differently and sometimes adjusting to the environment requires time.
  • Care manager or caregiver can first go to the person with dementia’s home to establish a personal relationship with them. When they start to trust the care manager or caregiver, family members can then try to invite them to a care center.
Trust the facility experts. As a care specialist, family members can make various arrangements so that their loved ones can spend their time comfortably and have fun. Try to do an individual needs assessment before contacting the support services.
